WWE 2k22 Review: Stacked Roster, Improved Modes, But Disappointing Island Microtransactions

In the realm of virtual wrestling, WWE 2k22 emerges as a towering behemoth, showcasing an array of modes and features that could make even the most seasoned grappler weak at the knees. With an all-star roster boasting legends like Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin, this game is a heavyweight in every sense of the word. The in-ring action remains as electrifying as a thunderstorm, with the return of chain wrestling and new match types adding layers of excitement to the squared circle. From intergender matches to bloodline rules bouts, the game offers a variety that keeps you on the edge of your seat, much like a high-speed lap around the Top Gear track.
The showcase mode delves deep into the bloodline and Anoa'i families, providing a cinematic experience complete with full ring entrances and top-notch commentary. Meanwhile, my rise mode allows players to craft their own wrestling saga, battling against an NXT invasion with a mix of drama and humor that would make even James May crack a smile. The return of my GM and universe modes brings a sense of nostalgia, with online features and promos adding a new dimension to the gameplay experience.
However, not all is sunshine and rainbows in the world of WWE 2k22. The new island mode, while intriguing in concept, falls flat with lackluster gameplay and a heavy reliance on microtransactions that could make even the most die-hard fan wince. Despite this misstep, the game's visual prowess shines through, with realistic details that make you feel like you're right in the middle of the action. Overall, WWE 2k22 stands tall as a titan in the wrestling game genre, offering a buffet of content that will keep players coming back for more, like a petrolhead drawn to the roar of a V8 engine.
